During a segment on the legalization of marijuana, Stephen Colbert joked about the band Phish. The comedian compared the ease of buying marijuana in Colorado, under some new legislation, to that of a parking lot at a Phish concert. He took the joke a step further, adding, “best of all, Phish isn’t playing.” When some Colbert Report audience members hooted at the remark, Colbert responded, saying, “got some Trey Anastasio fans here tonight.”

While some Phish fans may take offense to the remark, it is important to remember that Colbert’s character on the Report is just that… a character. Making fun of Phish is a pretty easy way to appear conservative, but, in reality, Colbert’s reference to Anastasio suggests that he has some familiarity with the band. It’s a joke… so laugh, will ya?!
