Aging millennial nostalgia is big business these days, with ’00s emo festival When We Were Young and the Creed comeback tour raking in millions. While Phish (controversially) broke new ground in EDM and Dopapod said goodbye, Goose hit its target demographic with a five-year bustout of “I2I” by fictional A Goofy Movie hitmaker Powerline on New Year’s Eve at the Moody Center in Austin.
Pronounced “eye to eye,” the song appears in the climax of the 1995 film that sees beloved Disney pooch Goofy take his brooding teenage son Max on a cross-country fishing trip. Like many Live For Live Music readers, however, Max would rather go to a concert by his favorite artist than spend time with his family.
The mononymous Powerline is heavily inspired by Prince, from his name to the title format “I2I” (like “I Would Die 4 U”), the synths that propel the song, and more. The track was even recorded at Prince’s Paisley Park Records by his protege Tevin Campbell, whose debut singles were produced by Prince and included in his film Graffiti Bridge.
The synth-heavy pop song was an idyl cover choice for Goose, which makes it surprising that it hadn’t appeared since its debut on June 15th, 2019 (382 shows ago) at Pizza in the Park in Stamford, CT, per ElGoose.net. The bust-out was worth the wait, as the slim few who recognized the tenuous and obscure ’90s Disney reference were flooded with memories from childhood when “I2I” kicked off the second set. Goose made the Powerline cover a focal point of the show, launching into the deepest improvisation of the evening on a 23-minute odyssey.
