Sierra Hull celebrated the release of her new album, A Tip Toe High Wire, with a guest-filled show at Brooklyn Bowl Nashville on Friday night.
After setting the tone with original material including a stirring rendition of “How Long” and the intricate “Bluegrass Concerto, Movement 3, ‘Pray'”, Hull performed her entire new album starting with lead single “Boom”, which featured the evening’s first special guest, Avery Merritt, on guitar. Stephanie Lambring joined in on vocals for “Muddy Water”, followed a few songs later by Hull’s husband Justin Moses, who sat in on “Spitfire” and “Truth Be Told”, which featured Hull on guitar and Avery Merritt on mandolin.
Those paying close attention to the setlist may have noticed that Hull initially skipped “Let’s Go”, but only because she was waiting to introduce her next special guest—Molly Tuttle—who played guitar and sang the part performed by Aoife O’Donovan on the album. The collaborations continued with an appearance by one of Hull’s progressive bluegrass influences, Béla Fleck, who produced her 2016 album Weighted Mind and is featured on the new album on a song called “E Tune”.

The final stretch featured an impressive round-robin-style series of sit-ins, with some of the night’s special guests rotating in and out. “Redbird” showcased Sierra Hull guitar work and featured Justin Moses; “What Do You Say?” saw the return of Molly Tuttle; and “Black River” was a major highlight of the show, bringing together Hull, Tuttle, and Fleck. Tuttle stayed on for “Best Buy” and, after switing to an octave madnolin for “Less”, Fleck returned to the stage along with Justin Moses to close the set with his song “Stomping Grounds”.
To cap off the evening, Hull thanked her fans for helping celebrate the release of her new album and sent them off on a high not with a cover of Tears for Fears‘ “Mad World”.
