Khruangbin treated fans in the band’s hometown of Houston, TX to a secret pop-up show at Cactus Music on Friday. The intimate in-store performance celebrated the shop’s 50th anniversary and served as a warm-up for the band’s first show in the area in three years at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion on Saturday.
Inside the cozy shop, fans packed shoulder-to-shoulder among racks of vinyl as guitarist Mark Speer, bassist Laura Lee Ochoa, and Donald “DJ” Johnson settled in for a special set of songs from throughout their growing catalog. They played several tunes from their 2015 debut album The Universe Smiles Upon You, including set-opener “Zionsville”, and selections from their most recent album, 2024’s A La Sala, which they have been performing in its entirety on tour. The 12-song set culminated with fan favorites “Maria Tambien” and “People Everywhere (Still Alive)”, which had the entire store moving from wall to wall.
