Warren Haynes Band resumed its Million Voices Whisper tour with a string of West Coast shows, and during the band’s stop at The Fillmore in San Francisco, Haynes offered a nod to hometown hero Jerry Garcia with a cover of “Black Peter” played on the Grateful Dead founder’s “Alligator” guitar.

The band led by Haynes with his Gov’t Mule bandmate Kevin Scott on bass, Terence Higgins on drums, Greg Osby on sax, and Railroad Earth‘s Matt Slocum on keys played two sets blending tunes from its recent release, Million Voices Whisper, songs from Gov’t Mule and Haynes’ solo catalog and from his tenure with the Allman Brothers Band, plus a funky mashup of Tower of Power‘s “What is Hip?” and Van Morrison‘s “I’ve Been Working”.

Toward the end of the second set, Haynes wielded “Alligator” during a cover of the Grateful Dead ballad “Black Peter”. The Fender Stratocaster was originally gifted to Jerry Garcia by Graham Nash in 1970 and played by the Grateful Dead guitarist from mid-1971 through mid-1973, including on the Dead’s historic European tour immortalized on its Europe ’72 album. The guitar is now in the care of Andy Logan, founder and president of Grateful Guitars, who has carried its legacy into the 21st century by sharing it with prominent musicians in the extended Grateful Dead family to play on stage.

Haynes also used the famous Fender during the encore on a cover of Steely Dan‘s “Pretzel Logic”.
