King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard kicked off their 2025 tour this week with a three-night run in Lisbon, Portugal. The trio of shows at the 4,300-capacity Coliseu dos Recreios ignited the Australian psych-psychos’ tour that will take them across 15 countries on three continents through December.

For their first show since November 21st, 2024 in Miami, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard came out hot with “Mars For the Rich” to start another marathon touring year. A few songs later, the band loaded up a one-two punch of “Antarctica” and “Ice V” for 25 minutes of psych-meets-jazz exploration. On the other end of the spectrum, Gizzard also played the shortest “Field of Vision” to date at just over four minutes, per KGLW.net.

The biggest highlight of the show for Gizzard’s jam-minded fans was probably a climactic 37-minute run of “Boogieman Sam” -> “Slow Jam 1” -> “Am I in Heaven”. Then, during the show-closing “Self-Immolate”, the band recemented its reputation for heavy rock hooliganery as singer/guitarist Stu Mackenzie shaved his head with help from guitarist Joey Walker and a photographer in the pit during Michael Cavanagh‘s drum solo finale. Some fans may have walked away with hair clippings for unique souvenirs (though they should remember the frontman’s recent bout with lice and take the proper precautions).

As opposed to the bone-crunching “Mars For the Rich” that kicked off Sunday’s tour opener, Gizzard eased into night two with “Iron Lung”. This 12-minute telling wove in and out of “Hypertension” before fully breaking through to a 20-minute version of the Laminated Denim jam vehicle. Among the highlights was an “Evil Death Roll” that began as a fuzzed-out assault, only for the band to break it down to its most basic elements and build it back up to another dizzying peak. Following “Evil Death Roll”, Gizzard went the storytelling route for a Murder of the Universe run of “Digital Black” > “Han-Tyumi, The Confused Cyborg” > “Soy-Protein Munt Machine” > “Vomit Coffin” > “Murder of the Universe” ahead of a “Le Risque” closer.

Once again starting big, “The Dripping Tap” got Tuesday’s show underway and paired up with “Magma” for a nearly half-hour opening sequence. Elsewhere, the band locked into a deep pocket for a trancelike “Straws in the Wind”, only to immediately shatter the groovy vibrations with a thrashing “Planet B”. King Gizzard also loaded up reptilian two-fer “Gaia” > “Gila Monster”, and then “Gaia” on the other end of a “Flamethrower” highlighted by Cavs’ drum solo. During a 15-minute trip to Nathan for “Set”, Joey Walker changed things up by playing guitar over the beats late in the synth jam, before the rest of the band followed suit and ultimately closed the show with a 22-minute “The River”.
