[Update 7/23/25]: On Wednesday afternoon, in between his two midweek shows with Phish at Forest Hills Stadium, Page McConnell took the mound at Citi Field to throw out the ceremonial opening pitch ahead of a game between the New York Mets and the Los Angeles Angels.

McConnell took the field rocking fist baseman Pete “the Polar Bear”Alonso’s number 20 jersey to the sounds of his own organ part on “Cars, Trucks, Buses” and a glowing introduction from the stadium announcer. While his pitch wasn’t exactly a strike, the catcher didn’t have to move his feet to snag it, so we’ll call it a win. Congrats, Page!

[7/22/23]: Lifelong New York Mets diehard and Phish keyboardist Page McConnell will put both of those designations to good use on Wednesday when he throws out the ceremonial first pitch ahead of the Mets’ day game against the Los Angeles Angels at Citi Field before returning to the nearby Forest Hills Stadium to round out a two-night run behind the keyboards with his Rock & Roll Hall of Fame-nominated band.

That announcement follows the news that the local MLB team’s mascots, Mr. Met and Mrs. Met, will be on hand before Phish’s Forest Hills show on Tuesday to visit the WaterWheel Foundation table. Early scouting reports indicate that Mr. Met has fully recovered from his spill during his appearance with The Lumineers earlier this month and will be ready to go for the Phish show.

Page McConnell’s ceremonial first pitch will take place at Citi Field at 1:10 p.m. Fans trying to hit both should note that Phish will start at Forest Hills Stadium earlier than usual (6:00 p.m.) due to the venue’s early curfew. You can probably still pull it off, though: take the 7 to the F to Forest Hills after the game and you’ll be there in about half an hour. Along with the announcement that McConnell will throw out the first pitch, the band shared an old photo to illustrate Page’s lifelong Mets fandom—a snap of the eventual Phish keyboardist as a child getting an autograph from Hall of Fame Mets pitcher Tom Seaver, the namesake of the street (Seaver Way) on which Citi Field is located. Plus, he has a band named after a baseball player, so he’s got that going for him.

Congrats, Page! Can’t wait to see you and the rest of the guys open Wednesday’s show with an a cappella arrangement of this banger below (or whatever, just a suggestion). Tune in to full livestreams of Phish’s Tuesday and Wednesday, July 22nd and 23rd shows at Forest Hills Stadium here.
