Enigmatic bassist and collaborative colonel Les Claypool marked the 50th birthday of his Claypool Lennon Delirium cohort Sean Ono Lennon on October 9th with a one-of-a-kind gift: the first-ever guitar from Pachyderm Instruments, which has previously focused on Claypool’s distinct basses and single-string Whamola.
As Lennon wrote in a post on his Instagram story, “This is the most legendary instrument I have ever had the honor to lay my fingers on!” In another Instagram story, he referred to the new instrument as “The Green Machine.”

Lennon’s Pachyderm guitar was built by luthier Maegan Wells for Pachyderm Instruments. As Wells explained in a post of her own, “Les Claypool asked me to build Sean Lennon a guitar for his 50th birthday. So I did. Please meet the very first Pachyderm Guitar !! … I don’t usually post the things I do with Les on my personal page, but this was too special not to share.”
She added, “Check out [Pachyderm Instruments] to see what we come up with next!!! I love working with this dude.”
“The first Pachyderm guitar,” Les Claypool wrote on social media. “Custom made for my good friend Shiner. Happy birthday brother.” In the caption of a second post featuring a photo of Claypool and Lennon with the new instrument, Les added, “Amazing evening. Go Shiner go!!”
Pachyderm Instruments has not shared the specs on the new instrument, though its shape is certainly reminiscent of the Claypool’s signature basses, which he typically designs in collaboration with luthier Dan Maloney.
Here’s hoping Sean and Les plan to enlist the new axe for something new with The Claypool Lennon Delirium, which has remained largely inactive since 2019’s South of Reality and its associated tour dates. That’s not to say that either musician has been taking it easy: In recent years, Les has mounted tours with his Fearless Flying Frog Brigade and Primus in the time since, in addition to moderating an “interstellar drum derby” to find Primus’ new drummer, John Hoffman. Lennon has remained active with a variety of recording projects as a producer. Last year, he collaborated with James McCartney, his fellow Beatles progeny, on new single “Primrose Hill”.
