Angine de Poitrine is not a band you’re likely to mistake for anyone else. The French-Canadian instrumental duo performs in matching polka-dotted costumes and cartoonishly oversized masks that conceal their true identities—on stage they go by Klek and Khn de Poitrine. The visual presentation is theatrical and absurd, but the music is the real reason to pay attention.
The duo plays instrumental microtonal math rock, a niche within a niche that might sound forbidding on paper. In practice, though, their sound is more approachable than that description implies. Unlike much of the math rock world, which tends toward the cerebral and angular, Angine de Poitrine is fundamentally groove-oriented. The rhythmic foundation of their music is physical and propulsive, giving listeners something to lock into even as the harmonics slide and shift in ways that standard Western tuning doesn’t quite account for.
A lot of that sonic density comes down to one instrument. Klek plays a custom double-neck guitar-bass and uses live looping to layer parts in real time, building up interlocking bass lines and guitar figures that give the band a fuller sound than you’d typically expect from a two-piece.

Since the release of their debut, Vol. 1, in 2024, the band has built a rapidly growing following in Quebec and beyond, racking up viral attention online and delivering electrifying performances at major festivals including the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal. A second volume appears to be on the way, with several upcoming shows billed as Lancement (launch) VOL. II.
The combination of the outlandish visual spectacle and the genuinely inventive music makes for a live show that is both fun and substantial. The costumes and masks are good for a laugh, but the music stands entirely on its own.
Angine de Poitrine will play its first U.S. shows at Le Poisson Rouge in New York City on September 9th and 10th, with additional tour dates across Canada.
Watch the duo perform live on KEXP (filmed in Rennes, France) and at Festival à Deux Têtes, and listen to Vol. 1 along with recent singles “Mata zyklek” and “Fabienk” below. Scroll down for a full list of upcoming shows, and head here for more information and tickets.
