After welcoming in mandolin/fiddle player Sam Bush on December 30, Yonder Mountain String Band got the Boulder Theater to themselves last night to celebrate the New Year with their Kinfolk. Billed as “The Best of the 70s,” last night’s show was a killer exhibition in some of the era’s biggest hits gone bluegrass.

Yonder Mountain wasted no time with their first selection of the night, “Travelin’ Prayer,” coming from Billy Joel’s 1974 album Piano Man, and although there were several occasions of original tunes getting played throughout the night – “Insult And An Elbow,” “Finally Saw The Light,” “Traffic Jam,” “Pass This Way,” – the majority of the show’s focus was on the 1970s. The first set also versions of King Harvest’s “Dancing In The Moonlight,” the Grateful Dead’s “Jack-A-Roe,” Stealers Wheel’s “Stuck In The Middle,” the Rolling Stones’ “Torn & Frayed,” America’s “Sister Golden Hair,” and David Bowie’s “Ziggy Stardust.” Not bad for an opening set, right?
The hits just kept on coming in the second set, with the bluegrass quintet busting out covers of The Eagles’ “Life In The Fast Lane,” Dolly Parton’s “Jolene,” the Dead’s Shakedown Street” and “Bertha,” Sister Sledge’s “We Are Family,” (see below), Lou Reed’s “Walk On The Wild Side,” Pure Prairie League’s “Amie,” and a sandwich of Bruce Springsteen’s “It’s Hard To Be A Saint In The City,” with Yonder Mountain’s “Landfall” wedged between.
