When the music was over at Phish’s Madison Square Garden show, things were just getting started a couple miles away at Irving Plaza. The New York, NY venue hosted two great funk acts, with Sophistafunk providing support for Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe. Both bands are at the top of their game, with Sophistafunk keeping it loose in the Northeast and Mr. Denson having a breakout 2015 including a tour with The Rolling Stones.

After an hourlong, free-flowing jam from the Sophistafunk crew, Denson and his crew took the stage. The multi-instrumentalist led the band through a number of originals, including “Cheerleader,” “Millvale, PA,” and “Monk Strap.” The band also covered Pink Floyd’s “Fearless” during the set, with guitarist DJ Williams leading the cause throughout. The band encored with the “Mission Impossible” theme song, ending a great night of music.
