Last weekend, Neil Young hosted the famed Bridge School Benefit concert over two nights at the famed Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, CA. The weekend was marked by all-star collaborations throughout, with Young showing his stamina and sitting in with nearly every artist on the bill. Some collaborations were to be expected, including the free-for-all rendition of “Rockin’ In The Free World” that featured Dave Matthews, Willie Nelson, My Morning Jacket and more. Others, however, were perhaps less expected, including a collaboration between Metallica and Young.

Metallica has been a favorite among hard-rock/metal enthusiasts for over 30 years, while Young has maintained an active music career since his folk days of the 1960’s. Since their genres are so distinct, it’s unsurprising that the paths of Metallica and Neil Young have never crossed. According to setlist.fm, however, last weekend’s performance was the first time that Young had ever joined Metallica on stage.

The collaboration came when Metallica closed out their set on Saturday night with a rendition of Buffalo Springfield’s tune “Mr. Soul.” They would reprise the collaboration on Sunday as well, leaving fans quite happy to see such iconic musicians letting loose together.
