Elephant Wrecking Ball, the instrumental, electronic-leaning power trio comprised of drummer Neal “Fro” Evans (Dopapod), trombonist Scott Flynn (Odesza), and bassist Dan Africano (Ghost Light), is gearing up to release a new studio album, JOY FRONT, due out next Friday, October 11th.
The forthcoming album marks Elephant Wrecking Ball’s fourth studio effort and their first since 2017’s Engage. As the band explains, JOY FRONT “successfully weaves adventurous musical explorations over beds of electronic-infused dub-like grooves, proving that the act of embracing a variety of styles can be channeled into an identity that is focused and pure despite its lack of a singular genre.”
“Do We Ah”, the lead single off of the new album featuring Snarky Puppy saxophonist Chris Bullock, embodies just that. As Scott Flynn tells Live For Live Music about EWB’s latest single,
I remember writing this song either on tour with Pretty Lights or shortly after. I wanted to write something with a simple, straight-ahead hip hop groove. The term ”Doweah” comes from joking around about all the fun and weird ways that people and horn players, myself included, can verbally articulate horn lines, like ”do be doo” or a recent favorite of mine, ”squee’.” For no particularly good reason, it felt like the perfect title for this song. Between when it was written and when we recorded it, I’d had the pleasure to spend some time playing with and getting to know and befriend Chris Bullock of Snarky Puppy. I asked if he’d wanted to play on this song and he obliged and wrote some amazing flute and tenor parts that really took the song to another level.
“Do We Ah” opens up with a wholesome yet simple backbeat before Flynn and Bullock join in with a twangy horn line, reminiscent of the sounds you’d hear walking past a hoppin’ New Orleans jazz club. The layering of saxophone and trombone adds a lush effect to the calming, feel-good tune, behind Evans and Africano’s infectious rhythmic groove. For those looking to kick back, relax, and quiet the mind, Elephant Wrecking Ball’s new “Do We Ah” single is sure to sweep you away into an ethereal space and time.
