In the fall of 2017, the dynamic, world-inspired instrumental quintet Toubab Krewe returned to the road after taking a break in 2014 (outside of a few festival appearances). The group followed up their highly anticipated fall tour with the announcement of their forthcoming third studio album, Stylo—the band’s first album since 2010’s TK2—and a number of new dates spanning across the first half of 2018. With Stylo‘s release date of March 2nd on the horizon (pre-order Toubab Krewe’s Stylo on PledgeMusic here), in recent weeks, Toubab Krewe has been slowly teasing what fans can expect from the band’s first album in seven years.
Toubab Krewe Adds Brooklyn Show To 2018 Reunion Tour
Stylo sees Toubab Krewe as inspired, innovative, and eclectic as ever. Across the album’s eight tracks, in characteristic Toubab Krewe style, the band gracefully fuses a number of musical traditions from around the world, drawing from places as disparate as Appalachia, West Africa, Pakistan, New Orleans, and more. Jubilant, energetic, and deeply compelling, the new album sets itself up to be the band’s finest yet. Today, Live For Live Music—in conjunction with Sirius XM’s Jam On, which debuted the track on the air this morning—is proud to host the online premiere of “Salut”, the latest single off Toubab Krewe’s Stylo.
On the heels of the December release of Stylo‘s psychedelic lead single, “That Damn Squash”, “Salut” is a cascading new tune that showcases the group’s hypnotic and effortless sound. While rhythmically propulsive and technically complex across its five-minute length, “Salut” starts serenely, eventually building to a dramatic drum break ahead of the number’s forceful close.
Drew Heller, electric guitarist and organist for the band offered these insights on “Salut”:
To create Stylo, we took a blend of influences ranging from Appalachia, West Africa, Lollywood, and New Orleans, and combined them into an eight-song trip. “Salut” is a traditional Wassoulou tune from Mali; it’s a tune I learned from the great Malian guitarist and songwriter Kabine Diakite.
