This weekend marked the seventh installment of the great Governors Ball Music Festival on Randall’s Island Park in New York, NY. The three-day event has become somewhat of a right of passage to the younger generation of music lovers, bringing out high school and college students to see their favorite acts across various genres. The blatantly enormous talent budget also invited live concert enthusiasts of all kinds to join the fun, offering diverse acts from across the musical spectrum.
The 2017 Governors Ball had something for everyone. On Friday, Charles Bradley & His Extraordinaires made a triumphant return with his sensational soul show, Schoolboy Q delivered an exciting set, though teasing the crowd that Kendrick Lamar “couldn’t make it,” Flume tossed feelings in the air with their dance-heavy electrons, Lorde was joined by Jack Antonoff (Bleachers, fun., Taylor Swift, Grimes) on keys and guitar, and Chance the Rapper closed the night on the highest of notes with his church-inspired rap bombs – throwing out all the hits like “Waves” and “No Problems,” which displayed all the record labels he denied on the screen while reminding the crowd of his three Grammy awards.

On Saturday, fans were treated to indie rockers Car Seat Headrest, Local Natives, The Head and the Heart, and Phoenix, among others, with a heavy dose of hip-hop from A$AP Ferg, Wu-Tang Clan, and Childish Gambino, who played his only set of the year and announced from the stage that his next album would be his last. Electronic acts Marshmello, Rüfü Du Sol, and Banks also won hearts, as did the stand-out Mark Ronson vs. Kevin Parker set that mixed Tame Impala’s chill factor with the pop producer’s extravagant showmanship.

On Sunday, the diversity continued to bring fans of all types together for headlining performances from Tool, Cage The Elephant, Wiz Khalifa, and Logic. Phantogram, AIR, Royal Blood, and The Avalanches also wowed, while Mac DeMarco, Franz Ferdinand, and Warpaint summed up what Governor’s Ball is all about. Non-stop entertainment to the best degree.
Tool was undoubtedly one of the weekend’s biggest acts, as their Sunday night performance marked the band’s return to New York City after 11 years. Watch videos from their set below, courtesy of matthighsociety.
