L4LM wants to wish Trey Anastasio a very happy 50th birthday today! In honor of Big Red’s golden anniversary, we compiled some of Trey’s best sit-in performances throughout the years, both old and new. Enjoy some of the Phish guitarist’s best collaborations.
1. Trey sits in for “Ship” with The North Mississippi All-Stars (the final track), 2005.
2. Trey drops by a star-studded Moe. show at the late Roseland Ballroom, also 2005.
(all tracks with $ feature Trey, and $$ are Trey acoustic)
3. A very special Phil & Friends show with Trey and Page, 1999
4. An intimate sit-in with his TAB bandmates Russ Lawton (drums) and Ray Paczkowski (keys), who perform as Soule Monde, from earlier this year.
5. Trey finds his way into the Allman Brothers Band set at Wanee, joining them for a version of The Dead’s “Franklin’s Tower,” earlier this year.
6. Speaking of The Dead, Trey sat in with Furthur at last year’s Lockn’ Festival. Trey jumps in for “Casey Jones,” and grooves through “Bertha,” “Truckin’,” “The Other One,” and “Viola Lee Blues.”
7. Trey also sat in with The Roots back in 2012 for six songs, including this version of “First Tube” below:
8. Not to mention a Trey sit-in with String Cheese Incident at a benefit concert in Broomfield, CO, 2010.
9. And who can forget Big Red’s cameo with Medeski, Martin and Wood at the 10,000 Lakes Festival in 2006?
10. Let’s wrap it up with a reversal, one of my personal favorite sit-ins with Phish… Bela Fleck, from 1994.
Keep on doing what you’re doing for the next 50 years, Trey!
