On Saturday night, Colorado-based quartet Magic Beans played a hometown Halloween show at Denver’s Summit Music Hall, aptly named the “Voodoo Masquerager”. The night kicked off with firey sets from the two support acts, Tnertle and Frogleg. Tnertle, an electronic dance funk-hop outfit based in Denver, and Frogleg, a genre-melding six-piece from Minneapolis, started the night off right by getting the masked crowd grooving and primed for the main event.

Brimming with spirited and spooky vibes, the venue filled in quickly with costumed fans eager to see what tricks would unfold on stage. For the first set, Magic Beans welcomed several very special guests including percussionist Chuck Morris (Lotus), saxophonist Clark Smith (Dynohunter), trumpeter Eric Levine, vocalist Jessica Jones, and multi-instrumentalist Silas Herman for the “Voodoo Set.” This talented bunch didn’t hold anything back, as the entire set sent chills out into the crowd with the dark, funky grooves you might find in New Orleans. The setlist was comprised of a number of seasonally appropriate jams including “Voodoo”, “Voodoo Child”, and of course “Voodoo Lady”. Jones, with her powerful, haunting and soulful vocals cast a spell across the entire room. The voodoo magic continued with a smooth and sexy “Night People” > “On Your Way Down” > “It’s All Over Now”, seamlessly melded into one another.

After a short set break, Magic Beans and Morris returned to the stage, coming in hot with “Mission” from their Casino Cabaret album as the crowd erupted. As the set rolled on, the smiles and energy beaming from the stage were happily devoured by the ghoulish onlookers in the crowd. With Morris’ distinct and impeccable rhythms amping up the groove, the rest of the set had a jammy flow that kept everyone getting down. The onstage communication between Scott Hachey (guitar/vocals), Chris Duffy (bass/vocals), Casey Russell (keys/synth/vocals) and Cody Wales (drums) showcased the captivating way they vibe so well together.  A heavy-hitting setlist for all Magic Beans fans continued with a seamless string of “What in the World”, “Alibi”, “Frontier”, and “Feed the Beast” before a set-closing take on “Contraband”.
