We couldn’t be more excited about Suwannee Hulaween, coming up in just over a month over Halloween weekend. From the diverse and stacked lineup to the incomparable Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park, Hulaween has the potential to be one of the best fests of the year. But enough from us — we went straight to Michael Berg, the man behind Silver Wrapper (Hulaween, North Coast) and Van Ghost, for the inside scoop on what makes this year’s Hulaween so special. He’s even gifted us with a personally curated playlist showcasing each artist on the bill!

Is it October 30th yet?!

1. The Music / Line Up

With new fests and events popping up every direction we all turn the main thing that obviously draws people to one festival over another is the music line up, and Suwannee Hulaween turned out to be one of the most diverse and exciting bills of the year. The String Cheese Incident, who founded Hulaween as a special Halloween event almost 20 years ago, are our host band for the weekend, and perform 7 times including a very special all-cover Halloween set. Other headliners include Pretty Lights, Primus, Chance The Rapper, ODESZA, & STS9 as well as sets by GRiZ, Lettuce, The Polish Ambassador, The Floozies, Papadosio, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead,  Slightly Stoopid,  Dumpstaphunk, Manic Science (Manic Focus x Break Science), Future Rock, The Nth Power, The Heard, Big Wild, and a ton of others.

To showcase the diversity of the artists, I put together this Spotify playlist for your ear holes & souls. These are not meant to be the deepest of cuts or only new/old material, but rather songs that best showcase each act and what you might expect to hear from them over the course of the weekend. Enjoy.

2. The Site (Spirit Of Suwannee Music Park)

The Spirit of Suwannee Music Park is a premier event site not only for the Southeast region but also the United States in general. Nestled into 800 acres upon aces of Old Oak Trees draped in Spanish Moss, the shaded and flat ground camping options are second to none. There is a main venue field already built into the grounds and a natural amphitheater for the two alternating main stages all weekend. Beauty will overcome your spirit the moment you enter the winding road leading you into the guts of the site. Explore the grounds during the day to find the lake, or a white sand beach on the black muddy river and breathtaking, lush forest life.

3. Spirit Lake

In the territory nestled between the main stages and general campgrounds you’ll find a Halloween-themed artistic collection of interactive and glowing installations called SPIRIT LAKE. Fire fueled iron sculptures, live painting, projection mapping, lasers & lights all bring the forest and Spanish Moss covered trees to life at night. In addition you’ll find performance art, fire dancers, a silent disco, yoga workshops, two more stages, and some other special surprises you’ll have to see in person. Take a look at this recap video from Spirit Lake last year and just know, like the music lineup, we are going bigger and better this year across the board…

4. The Vibe / The People / Costumes / Theme

The beautiful spirits of Suwannee Hulaween mixed with everything mentioned above create the vibe. It’s all about the vibe. It’s a laid back, family friendly, supportive community and the fact that it is celebrating Halloween takes it all to the next level. Costumes can be seen on the Hula fans, every direction you turn. To make this even easier, Silver Wrapper, Purple Hat and SCI recently announced the Halloween Costume Theme for the weekend as “GHOUL TRAIN”. Think of a mash up of the hit TV show from the 70’s/80’s Soul Train with The Addams Family and/or Monsters Inc. Fans are encouraged to participate and go as freaky, sexy, or weird as their imaginations will allow.

5. The Weather

The weather at Hulaween is warm traditional Florida style during the day for catching a tan and dancing in the sunshine. At night it gets cold, which lets you bundle up in your favorite hoodie, stay warm by a campfire or one of the fire installations at Spirit Lake. This is ideal for staying comfortable in your costume as well as cuddling up in your sleeping bag by yourself or with your significant other at night for some comfortable non sweaty camping, because we all know… the snuggle is real.

Thanks for reading, hope you enjoy the playlist and we’re hoping to see y’all in a few short weeks at Suwannee Hulaween!
