Moon Hooch packed up the Port City Music Hall in Portland, ME on Wednesday night, bringing out New York City, “brasshouse” trio Too Many Zoos to open the show.
The billing made perfect sense, with both bands bringing two horn players, a drummer, and a big following. During the opening set, the band told the story of how they started out busking in the subway and Wenzl McGowen from Moon Hooch discovered them. He introduced himself and explained he had a similar style band and ultimately offered them a gig. Their first show playing above ground was opening for Moon Hooch.
For the headlining performance, Moon Hooch welcomed out vocalist Elena Shirin to sing a song early in the set. The set closed with a full-stage super jam, featuring members of both Moon Hooch and Too Many Zoos for an epic, brassy throwdown.
