Dead & Company played their seventh concert at The DCU Center in Worcester, MA last night. The evening opened with psychedelic love song “Cassidy”, immediately setting the tone for a high-energy, jammy night of music. By “Row Jimmy” and “Ramble On Rose”, the whole band was locked in and the room was screaming, with Jeff Chimenti blazing through an epic solo.

John Mayer heroically led the band through “Sugaree,” where Bob Weir and Oteil Burbridge led honest harmonies throughout, keeping the crowd excited that the band “Let Oteil Sing.” The polyphonous tones continued with “The Music Never Stopped” and carried on throughout the night.

Second set opened strong with “Deal”, a real crowd-pleaser, into “Uncle John’s Band” where Mayer proved himself an impressive bandleader with creative, out-of-the-box song transitions. The set was all energy!

Deep jams ensued throughout the entirety of the second set, where “Estimated Prophet” featured trippy, chorally harmonizations with cavernous range in emotion and intent. Mayer returns to “Lady With A Fan” beautifully, and with such ease that the tune almost feels like it could be a JM original. It’s no secret that Mayer relates to love songs, and it’s obvious the deep levels of appreciation he has when singing the lyrics of Robert Hunter & Jerry Garcia. 

Second half of second set was a real treat. Oteil Burbridge, now an official member of the Rhythm Devils, joined in once again for a tribal “Drums” on Billy’s kit, while Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart led a percussive battlefield. After “Space”, things got even more magical with a cover of The Beatles’ “Dear Prudence”, led by Bob Weir who reminded us all to take a moment of appreciation for pure beauty. In loving memory of Allen Toussaint, they paid tribute to the late legend with “Get Out Of My Life Woman” with Mayer on vocals.

The night ended with a fully acoustic “Ripple”, and the room emptied in high spirits, as they had just witnessed another incredible night with Dead & Company.
