With the recent release of their newest EP, Pattern Integrities Vol. I last month, Asheville-based jamtronica group Papadosio is embarking on a fall tour that traverses the East Coast and the Midwest. The last two nights, October 14-15, they brought their unique sound to Chicago’s Concord Music Hall for two solid shows that undoubtedly are showcasing their newest music.

Friday night Flightwave opened and Saturday night Ethereal Groove, Inc. (EGI) were the openers. Both groups did a good job of beginning the night with music. However, both nights belonged to Papadosio. Specifically the band made to sure to give fans their newest music. All eight of the tracks of Pattern Integrities Vol. I were played over the course of the weekend run. These instrumentals all fit in very well with the sets, and some even got the treatment.

Friday night began with a simple yet powerful 4/4 beat from drummer Mike Healy, signaling the instrumental “Hippie Babysitter.” This version, as it often does, included some quality improvisation. The highlight of the first night came mid-set when they played “The Plug.” Getting the crowd amped up with the very sing-a-long chorus, they veered from the normal path of the tune into a jam.

Keyboardist brothers Sam Brouse and Billy Brouse had some great interplay on the keys before bringing the improv to a slow halt and then playing “Bypass Default,” giving guitarist Anthony Thogmartin a chance to use an acoustic guitar. The conclusion of “The Plug” returned at the end of the set, again to rousing cheers from the crowd. New tracks “Threes” and “Omnifreeze” were a perfect choice for the encore.

Saturday night continued with more new tunes. The spacier track “Euclidean Lights” set the tone for a much more ambient sound for the night. Older instrumentals “We Are Water” and “Advocate of Change” were played with extended jamming to which crowd danced hard. The bluesy “Holy Heck,” a song that is not played too often, was a surprise to all and executed flawlessly. The night ended with a very fun version of “Unparalyzer.” Saturday night party achieved.

With Pattern Integrities Vol. I, Papadosio has taken their music in a very different direction. For any fans wondering how it would hold up in the live setting, those questions can now be allayed. The group continues to expand and transform their sound, and this newest album sounds as good as their first. They’ll be hitting up Detroit and Raleigh before stopping in Washington DC for what will surely be a fun Halloween weekend.
