Halloween at The Gramercy Theatre was a night of chaos, costumes, and delicious jams.

Electronic rock band Kloptoscope opened the show with a brief  bassy set. Hailing from Burlington, Vermont, the four man band uses drums, guitar, synth, bass, sax and keys to blend all the possible sounds of popular jam bands.

Twiddle, also a quartet from Vermont, came on stage around 9 PM. The energy on the dance floor escalated as the band went into their song “Doinkinbonk” and brought out sax player Kenny Brooks for the remainder of their set. Lead guitarist and singer Mihali Savoulidis whaled signature high pitched guitar peaks as keyboard player Ryan Dempsey tickled the ivories dressed in a of Phantom of the Opera costume. Bassist Zdenek Gubb wore a Viking costume while serving up funky bass lines.

Twiddle played “Hatti’s Jam” into “When it Rains it Pours” where they sampled a bit of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”. Their act ended heavily with the song “The Box” and mixed a surprise taste of Daft Punk’s “Robot Rock” in the middle of the song like they had  during their daytime Camp Bisco set earlier this year.

Kung Fu took the stage and brought the fire. Guitarist Tim Palmieri and sax player Rob Somerville wore tradition Asian suits and rice hats. Bassist Chris DeAngelis, drummer Adrian Tramontano, and keyboardist Todd Stoops wore creepy long beaked masks.

The mix of metal like jams and the strange shadowy silhouettes of the band members  really made this Halloween show extra weird. Kung Fu’s exploration of genres moved the audience from mosh-pits to funk grooves. Fights broke out left and right inside the venue and out in the smoking area throughout the night. With their smooth change in musical direction, Kung Fu gave bits of everything from classic rock medleys, hard hitting metal, to an impressive five minute drum and keyboard solos.

The show concluded with a super group jam between Twiddle and Kung Fu which truly was the icing on the cake. The musicians that had participated in the Halloween extravaganza possess an insane amount of talent and potential for greatness. All these bands are gaining tons of recognition very quickly and with shows like the one at the Gramercy, it is easy to understand why.
