Just two weeks into the month of February, Texas-based quartet TryMore MOJO has already had one of the biggest months of their career. Not only did they unveil their First Contact EP, but they also hosted a sold-out release party at Dallas’ Sundown at Granada on February 1st.

The four-song First Contact EP displays many of the unique musical influences that TryMore MOJO has incorporated into their sound. Recorded, mixed, mastered, and filmed at SŌL Studios in Fort Smith, AR, the EP is difficult to characterize with any one genre.

Deeply rooted funk influences are evident on many levels, from the strong basslines provided by Coty Austin to the heavily syncopated beats of drummer Medrick ‘Medz’ Greely. Guitarist Evan Lamb‘s ability to get heavy, combined with the hip-hop-inspired vocals on the EP’s lead track, “Stockholm”, is reminiscent of Rage Against The Machine, yet jazzy improv sections and interludes à la Snarky Puppy highlight a dynamic stream of musical creativity.

Dripping with excellent synth work from Leland Kracher, “Resolutions” showcases yet another tool in the TryMore MOJO arsenal. Spacey soundscapes and electronic overtones bond on “Who We Are”, creating a base layer for vocal harmonies and rap verses that set up an expansive jam segment and illustrate the breadth of the band’s sonic range.
