Widespread Panic continues to be one of the driving forces of the modern jam scene, bringing a sense of Southern flare to their improv-laden rock and roll. Having just wrapped up a two-night run in Mississippi, today the band will take the day off to celebrate the 54th birthday of guitarist/vocalist John Bell.

Bell is not only a founding member of the band, but a strong influence on the group’s dynamic sound. While the band has undergone many changes in their lengthy career, JB has remained a fixture of the group’s presence. Between his songwriting abilities and his ability to conjure such a strong emotional response through raspy vocals, WSP truly prospers from his rich talents.

While there are countless videos that highlight Bell’s abilities, we still find ourselves moved by this pro-shot footage from the band’s New Year’s performance in The Fox Theatre in Atlanta, GA. With a backing provided by the Megablaster Horns, Panic brought out a cover of David Bowie’s “Heroes” much to their fan’s delight. The song took on a new life, however, when Bowie passed away just days later.

“Heroes” itself is an emotional song, but with John Bell at the helm, this performance is simply chilling. Watch it all go down below:

Happy birthday, JB. Keep on rocking it.
