Every year moe. looks at the Summer Camp Music Festival as a chance to give their fans something special, and this year they decided to pull out all the stops when it came to debuting and busting out rare covers. Over the course of a truly epic 45 minutes, moe. covered songs from two of music’s biggest legends and one of their own classics for a mind boggling three song run.
We’ve already shown you their last night bookends renditions of The Who‘s “Baba O’Riley” and Cream‘s “White Room” but we saved the biggest and wildest for last. With Kyle Hollingsworth from String Cheese Incident on hand to deliver some stellar support on keys, moe. gave an impressive reading of the Pink Floyd song “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” from the seminal Wish You Were Here album.
The cheers that greeted the opening strains of “Shine On” grew all the louder as the band then segued into their own dark masterpiece “Opium,” always a crowd favorite. Finishing their ten minute plus version of “Opium,” the band showed they weren’t done with Hollingsworth or special covers from classic bands by sliding directly into a ripping version of the seminal Talking Heads tune, “Making Flippy Floppy”! Al Schnier did a credible David Byrne impression, and the rest of the band showed how a Talking Heads jam-band would have sounded.
Our own Rex Thomson was on hand and made sure to set up near the soundboard to catch as much of the amazing light show from Preston Hoffman as possible. Making imaginative use of image mapping technology and dozens of moving stands Hoffman delivered one of the best visual displays ever seen at Summer Camp. Another tip of the hat goes to moe. sound engineer and all around handyman Steve Young, who set up rear channels in the concert field to deliver a full quadraphonic sound-scape to really take the psychedelic experience to the next level.
