Times may be awfully tough for independent music venues and concert promoters across the country with the halt on concerts and festivals for the foreseeable future, but COVID-19 won’t stop event production giant AEG Presents from moving forward with a new state-of-the-art venue in Las Vegas with the goal of opening for business in 2021.

A new report published by Billboard on Thursday shared AEG’s plans to partner with Resorts World for a 5,000-person capacity theater that will exist at the new Las Vegas resort and casino which is still in the process of being built from the ground up. Executives hope The Theatre at Resorts World Las Vegas will be the city’s latest notable venue capable of hosting major residencies, which continue to grow in popularity as high profile artists opt to remain in one place rather than deal with constant touring. The two parties also hope to see the new venue and resort open for business by next summer–a lofty goal even under normal circumstances let alone during a global pandemic.

The state-of-the-art theater designed by Scéno Plus will be used for not just for one-time concerts and lengthy residencies, but also conventions and sporting events. The room will offer artist teams and production designers innovative staging and advanced technology capabilities to meet any kind of creative performance concept. Other amenities include a 65-foot custom chandelier which will hang in The Theatre’s four-story lobby and an intimate seating arrangement that fits both an orchestra floor and two balcony levels. The furthest seat in the house will only be 150 feet from the stage.

As for the stage itself, performers will have a workspace of 64-feet deep and 196-feet wide for 13,550 total square feet of space. The house’s audio system will be made up of 265 speakers which offer a multi-dimensional surround sound listening experience for fans. Artists and their production teams will also be able to utilize the 5,000 square feet of LED screens which will be located in the room as well.

Concerts West President/co-CEO John Meglen said of the new venue, “The residency has gotten stale. Artists bring in their touring shows and bands play X number of nights in a smaller theater—where you can get bottle service as opposed to really getting creative. We want to get back to great shows. We want to create a playground with all the latest bells and whistles, and let artists come in and execute their own unique show and vision.”

“There’s not a point that we’re not going to open, but you have to remember these buildings aren’t built for 50% occupancy,” Resorts World Las Vegas President Scott Sibella said with Thursday’s announcement in regards to limited capacities in a time of  COVID-19. “You don’t build a theater and then all of a sudden say, ‘we only want 2,000 people in there—every other seat.’ That’s not how the program is designed. It could ruin the energy. It could ruin the economic model. Everybody’s doing a great job of playing by the rules, but none of the properties on the Strip can continue to do this forever. Something has to give. Things have to get better or everybody has to look at their model again and figure out how to operate these massive buildings. We’re not there yet but we’re watching closely.”

The announcement follows a rough spring and start to the summer for AEG, which furloughed or laid off many of its global employees last month as all concert tours and festivals remain on pause.

Sibella added, “When the rebound starts to occur throughout this country, Vegas will take off. We hope that things are much better by next summer. We know it won’t be where Vegas was, but we do feel that the non-gaming revenue aspect will continue to grow.”
