Alan Evans Trio (Ae3) has shared a new single, “Elephant Head”, which previews a yet-unannounced forthcoming studio album. This marks the first studio output from the trio since 2019’s The Wild Root.

Comprised of members Alan Evans (Soulive), Danny Mayer (Star Kitchen), and Kris Yunker (On The Spot Trio), Ae3 picked up right where it left off with The Wild Root. “Elephant Head” arrives with all of the infectious funk melodies, rhythmic interplay, and deep grooves expected from the power trio.

The new single opens with a few pounded chords from Yunker’s keys while Evans’ drums add fills that open the door for some guitar to make an appearance. Mayer enters with a wavy, psychedelic stride and settles on a tightly plucked riff that propels the song into full funk territory, à la Booker T. & the M.G.’s. Layers of guitar sit atop the mix throughout “Elephant Head” while Evans keeps a metronome-like tempo behind the kit and Yunker delivers licks from a variety of key-based instruments. This funkified wall of sound takes only a brief pause for a breakdown midway through the song, before returning in full force and continuing all the way to the finish line.

“It’s been a little while but your wait for new music from Ae3 is over!! The new single ‘Elephant Head’ from our upcoming album is out today,” said Evans in a Facebook post. “I always have such an amazing time in the studio with Danny and Kris. It’s always a new adventure that pushes our creativity to the max”
