Last week, an all-star cast of musicians got together at American Beauty NYC to re-create the beloved Alanis Morrissette album Jagged Little Pill, all while raising money and awareness for the great and necessary Planned Parenthood. We’ve all been looking for a way to fight back against the changes that are happening around us in our country, and this was a great way for musicians and fans to come together and support a cause that many people care about so strongly.

The band, spearheaded by Michaelangelo Carubba of Turkuaz, was made up of other Turkuaz members Shira Elias, Sammi Garett, and Craig Brodhead, along with Jennifer Hartswick of the Trey Anastasio Band, Nate Edgar of The Nth Power, Mayteana Morales of Pimps Of Joytime, and guitarist Sasha Brown. The group opened the night with a set of pop and funk covers, with “King of Pain” by The Police, “It’s A Man’s, Man’s, Man’s World” By James Brown, and “Proud Mary” by Creedence Clearwater Revival all showing up in the setlist.

Then, for set two, the band turned in a raucous recreation of Jagged Little Pill that would’ve done Alanis herself proud. The band positioned the four female singers front-and-center, and each of them took their turn delivering highlight after highlight from the quintessential “girl power” album from the 90s. It was truly a sight to behold, and the audience ate it up, going crazy for songs like “You Oughta Know”, “Ironic”, and “Hand in My Pocket.” At the end of the show, the band came to the front of the stage, arm-in-arm, and took a bow in unison, showcasing the true team effort that went into making this show so special.

After the show, Carubba told us: “For me, this event was a way for me to face, head on, two things that I think I misunderstood, or, at least, had no strong connection with. [Jagged Little Pill] and Planned Parenthood, at the time, just stood together in my mind and I knew that something was there. Then, when I dove in and listened to Jagged Little Pill over and over and over, and I read about Margaret Sanger and the history of Planned Parenthood, the two subjects became inseparable to me. We had to do something with it. Picking the band was easy. I didn’t even really blink. Everyone you saw on stage was an immediate choice for me, and if you listen back, you can hear why.

P.S., the show was almost a week ago and I’ve listened to JLP at least once a day since then.”

Garett, the pink-haired powerhouse from Turkuaz, also had enthusiastic memories from the night, stating that “it was so much fun performing Jagged Little Pill from start to finish! It was very nostalgic for me, and I’m sure it was for every who came to the show. To top it all off, we were performing this music to support Planed Parenthood! It was truly a magical and powerful night. Girl power!”
