For the penultimate stop of the annual Allman Betts Family Revival tour, the band hosted a star-studded Saturday night blowout in L.A. Last Saturday’s show at the Orpheum Theatre saw the Allman Betts Band bring out special guests Sierra Hull, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, Jackie Greene, Amanda Shires, Judith Hill, and more.
In addition to the cavalcade of special guests, the stop in Tinsel Town featured a rotating backing band comprised of Dweezil Zappa, North Mississippi Allstars bandmate brothers Luther and Cody Dickinson, sacred steel guitarist Robert Randolph, rockabilly progeny Alex Orbison, and New Orleans soul singer Sierra Green. These acts shuffled in and out alongside the Allman Betts Band, led by Allman Brothers Band kin Devon Allman (son of Gregg) and Dickey Betts’ son, Duane Betts.
The ninth-annual Allman Betts Family Revival once again sees the keepers of the ABB flame paying tribute to their fathers. As has become tradition, Devon and Duane split the show with individual sets dedicated to each of their dads. Devon helmed the opening frame, with Allman classics “Hot ‘Lanta”, “Stand Back”, “Come and Go Blues”, and Blind Willie McTell‘s “Statesboro Blues” with Wet Willie singer and harmonica player, Jimmy Hall. The parade of special guests got going toward the end of the first set, as Michael Jackson/Prince backing vocalist Judith Hill took centerstage on “Ain’t Wastin’ Time No More” and blues torchbearer Kingfish helped punctuate the set with added guitar fireworks on “Dreams”.
Duane Betts led off the second set with his dad’s iconic instrumental “Jessica”, before Kingfish came back out for some more Delta Blues on Muddy Waters‘ “Trouble No More”. Jimmy Hall also circled back around for “Southbound” with Judith Hill and Australian guitarist Orianthi, ahead of a guest spot from fiddling singer-songwriter Amanda Shires on “Can You Fool”, off Gregg Allman’s controversial 1977 album with his former wife Cher, Two the Hard Way.
Returning to the traditional ABB canon, hits continued with “Melissa” and “Seven Turns”, followed by world-renowned mandolinist Sierra Hull, who bolstered “End of the Line”, an Allman-Warren Haynes–Allen Woody-penned hidden gem off 1991’s Shades of Two Worlds. In addition to mining some deeper recesses of the expansive Allman Brothers catalog, the Allman Betts Family Revival has a solid track record of incorporating more strong female voices into the band’s inherently masculine legacy.
Ironically, “End of the Line” was followed by “Back Where it All Begins”, before Shires led the charge through perennial set-closer “Whipping Post”. Taking the stage once more for the encore, co-band leaders Duane and Devon split the dual song sendoff, with Dickey Betts’ “Ramblin’ Man” sung by Jackie Greene and Devon Allman inviting all the special guests back out to close the show with “Midnight Rider”.
