ALO kicked off its Tour D’Amour XIX over the weekend with two special nights featuring a legendary guitar once owned by Jerry Garcia and a Valentine’s Day appearance by Jack Johnson.

The tour opened Friday at Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach, CA, where guitarist Dan “Lebo” Lebowitz played Jerry Garcia’s 1976 Travis Bean TB500 #12 guitar. Lebowitz wielded the legendary instrument on “Try” before launching into the classic Grateful Dead sequence “Help on the Way” > “Slipknot!” > “Franklin’s Tower”, with the band’s own “Chilly Chile” inserted between “Help on the Way” and “Slipknot!”

The Solana Beach show also featured Montana singer-songwriter Madeline Hawthorne, who opened the evening and returned to the stage to join ALO on Fleetwood Mac‘s “You Make Loving Fun”.

The following night at Santa Barbara’s SOhO Music Club, ALO celebrated Valentine’s Day with a special guest appearance by longtime collaborator and Brushfire Records label-mate Jack Johnson. The Hawaii-based musician joined the band for an extended sit-in that included his own “Better Together” and “Girl, I Wanna Lay You Down”, Sublime‘s “Badfish”, Buddy Holly‘s “Not Fade Away” (a Grateful Dead staple), and ALO’s “Mud Football”. Hawthorne once again opened the show.
