Police in San Rafael, CA are investigating a suspected arson at the former home of Terrapin Crossroads, the beloved Bay Area restaurant and music venue owned by late Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh.

Firefighters responded to calls around 4 a.m. Sunday morning and quickly extinguished the blaze within 15 minutes. Luckily, no one was injured.

Upon investigating the cause, authorities determined someone had poured gasoline along the wall of the building before igniting the fire. Witnesses reported seeing the flames from across the San Rafael Canal at Montecito Plaza. No arrests have been made in connection with the alleged arson.

Established in 2012, Terrapin Crossroads served as a major hub for Deadheads and music lovers until shutting its doors in November 2021. Once a gathering spot for fans and musicians alike, the venue was frequented by Lesh himself as he slowed down his touring schedule and hosted intimate performances by top acts including Bob Weir, Chris Robinson, and a whole community of regulars.

Sunday’s blaze damaged part of the building’s south-side wall and activated sprinklers that caused water damage in a section of the former restaurant kitchen, but it could have been much worse.

The cost of the damages remains unknown, and authorities continue to investigate.
