Big Head Todd and the Monsters made their triumphant return to Red Rocks Amphitheatre earlier this month. Performing two nights just a stone’s throw from where their journey began 40 years ago, the band was joined by Cheap Trick, Cracker, Bill Murray and His Blood Brothers, and Warren Haynes Band.
Night one kicked off with sets from Cheap Trick and Cracker, who primed the crowd with a combination of classic and alternative rock. When Big Head Todd and the Monsters took the stage, they wasted no time diving deep into their extensive catalog. Tracks from their breakout 1993 album Sister Sweetly—like “Bittersweet” and “Broken Hearted Savior”—had the crowd singing along, while newer songs from 2021’s Her Way Out added fresh energy to the evening. The band also honored their blues-rock influences with covers of Looking Glass’ “Brandy”, John Lee Hooker’s “Boom Boom”, and Led Zeppelin’s “Tangerine”. The night culminated in an encore with powerhouse vocalist Hazel Miller, who elevated the energy with soul-stirring takes on “It’s Alright”, “Sister Sweetly”, and a gritty version of AC/DC’s “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap”.
The second night featured quite a different bill, with Bill Murray and His Blood Brothers opening the show, followed by a set from Warren Haynes Band. Once again, Big Head Todd and the Monsters offered a career-spanning set, dusting off gems like “The Leaving Song” and “Stratagem” alongside tried-and-true staples. Hazel Miller rejoined the band during the encore, adding her dynamic presence to “Beautiful World” and “If You Can’t Slow Down”. Just when it seemed the weekend had peaked, Warren Haynes returned to the stage to join in on a rousing, emotional rendition of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Free Bird”.
