Big Something takes on The Flaming Lips in the latest episode of the Tiny House Concert Series.
Before performing down the road at Greenfield Lake Amphitheater in Wilmington, NC on June 28th (and debuting a cover of “Chilly Water” by Widespread Panic), Big Something stopped by Ted’s listening room for an intimate and emotionally compelling performance of “The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song”, off The Flaming Lips’ 2006 album, At War with the Mystics.
Not unlike its public radio predecessor, the newly launched Tiny House Concert series typically features all acoustic performances. This time, however, the producers allowed the band to plug in its instruments, including an EWI electronic saxophone. “We usually keep it strictly acoustic inside the Tiny House,” they wrote in the video description, “but we had to make an exception for our good friends to express themselves with electric instruments.”
Despite the added voltage, the cover remains soft and gentle, with singer Nick MacDaniels‘ powerful lead vocals taking center stage overtop a steadily building wave of reverberating textures.
The release of the episode coincides with the return of Big Something’s festival, The Big What?, which is taking place this weekend at Shakori Hills Community Arts Center in Pittsboro, NC. It also marks the newest entry in the inaugural season of the Tiny House Concert Series, which showcases stripped-down sets from leading jam, Americana, and folk artists. Early episodes have featured performances by Goose, Charley Crockett, The Wood Brothers, ALO, and John Butler, with future episodes on the way from Daniel Donato, Shadowgrass, and more.
