The Christmas season is a time wrought with emotions both good and bad. The annual gatherings remind us both of all that we have and all that we’ve lost. Nothing perhaps exemplifies this emotional juxtaposition better than Billy Corgan who staged his annual Christmas concert with his family in the wake of his father, William Corgan Sr.‘s death.

The concert, held at the Smashing Pumpkins frontman’s Madame ZuZu’s vegan tea house in the Chicago suburb of Highland Park, saw Corgan debut two original holiday songs. The Corgan clan of Billy, his partner Chloe Mendel, and their daughter Philomena also performed the Christmas staple, “Do You Hear What I Hear?”

Ahead of Saturday’s concert, William Patrick took to the internet to update fans on his father’s passing and say something about how his father influenced his own relationship with music.

“My father had his own struggles with music and had a very complicated and oftentimes bitter relationship with the music business. He assumed that I would have the same,” he said. “It all started with him, watching him play in basements and at sound checks and empty stinking bars.”

Even in the wake of his dad’s death, Billy noted, “The show goes on, that’s what my father believed in.” So, the young Corgan put his father’s words to action as he mounted the holiday show, performing “Do You Hear What I Hear?” with his young daughter. The singer-songwriter also debuted two original compositions, “Evergreen” and “The Magi and the Shiny Bright”, which both drape a decidedly Corgan hue over the holiday tinsel.
