In a preview clip from next week’s Guitar Legends 4 virtual benefit, Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top) teams up with Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi (Tedeschi Trucks Band) for a remote collaboration on the oft-adapted Elmore James blues classic, “Done Somebody Wrong”.
Gibbons is set to return as the host the fourth-annual benefit event presented by America Salutes You, the non-profit that partners with the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs to deliver messaging on veterans’ mental wellness, suicide prevention, and more in addition to highlighting the work of doctors and nurses on the front lines, the fourth-annual benefit will collect donations for a variety of non-profits. Per a statement from America Salutes You, “100% of public donations will go to support the various non-profits and will be raised via text and online fundraising during broadcasts and streams. This year’s charitable recipients include TAPS, Heart and Armor Foundation for Veterans Health, The McCain Institute Foundation, CreatiVets, Operation Stand Down of TN, Veterans Support Foundation, Patriotic Service Dog Foundation, and Bridging the Gap Foundation.”
Gibbons kicks off the clip, premiered exclusively via Rolling Stone, with his best radio DJ impression, noting, “Here’s the next one, my good buddies Derek Trucks and the lovely Susan Tedeschi groovin on the Elmore James classic, ‘Done Somebody Wrong’. Come on, give it to me.” As Billy throws a new 45 on his turntable, the video fades to two separate clusters of musicians—Susan and Derek in one remote panel, Billy and his backing band in another—to collaborate on the lively blues staple.
According to Rolling Stone, “Gibbons taped his performances at the Foo Fighters’ Studio 606 in Los Angeles and the guests filmed their segments all over America.” In this case, Derek and Susan put down their parts at their home studio in Jacksonville, FL.
With Susan handling lead vocals, the sparse blues shuffle takes the time to throw it to Billy (on his black Gibson SG) and Derek (seated, playing slide on his acoustic) for some brief but fiery solos. Following the performance, the camera fades to Derek and Susan, who deliver a brief message about the Guitar Legends cause. “Guitar Legends 4 is about creating awareness as to how we value our veterans, our first responders and, this year especially, our nurses and doctors on the front lines,” Derek notes.
Adds Susan, “Music is a universal and magical formula for healing and uniting. Music brings us together … and we hope everybody who can give gives generously to America Salutes You, which will benefit a host of deserving charities throughout the holidays.” Watch the video of Billy Gibbons, Susan Tedeschi, and Derek Trucks performing “Done Somebody Wrong” below:
