Billy Strings Covers Widespread Panic, Grateful Dead At Hulaween 2019 In Newly Uploaded Videos [Watch]

Watching Billy Strings progress from flatpicking wiz-kid to Grammy-winning wild-man dancing the line between bluegrass and psychedelic jam-rock has been one of the most riveting live music storylines of the past decade. Even the pandemic couldn’t slow Billy and his band down as they consistently adapted to the state of affairs and managed to continue trucking along.

Billy Strings (guitar, vocals), Billy Failing (banjo, vocals), Royal Masat (bass, vocals), and Jarrod Walker (mandolin, vocals, guitar) show no signs of slowing down in 2022. They’re up for their second consecutive Best Bluegrass Album Grammy for 2021’s Renewal, and will dive into the new year with a string of winter tour dates in addition to a newly announced spring run.

Of course, Billy was well on his way to stardom prior to 2020. Back in the fall of 2019, Strings stole the show on the final day of Suwannee Hulaween with a mesmerizing performance featuring his patented mix of a number of fan-favorite originals, a smattering of traditional tunes, and an homage to both the Grateful Dead and Widespread Panic.

While a handful of songs from the set have lived online since that weekend, videographer Rex-A-Vision has just uploaded another crop of songs from the set to YouTube including, among others, the covers of “All Time Low” and “China Doll”. After an eventful 2021 that saw Billy Strings deliver high-profile collaborations with both Widespread Panic (at Mempho Fest) and the Dead’s Bill Kreutzmann (as part of Billy & The Kids), these clips—long, braided hair and all—both remind us of a simpler time and ensure us that the future remains bright.
