Audiences have previously heard highlights of Dylan’s tour with The Band—which witnessed them play 30 concerts in 42 days, many times two shows a day—on the 1974 live double LP Before the Flood. That document barely scratches the surface of The 1974 Live Recordings, which hosts full or partial Dylan sets from 27 of the shows. Behind him was his backing band from nearly a decade earlier, now known as The Band and stars in their own right with six LPs and a reputation as a leading voice for what rock music would become in the 1970s. Together, they introduced a new era of rock concerts as they filled arenas and stadiums—Dylan’s first time doing so—and played to a reported average of 18,500 people a night. Though Dylan came out to join The Band for their set at the tour opener on January 3rd, 1974 at Chicago Stadium, he never did so again for the remainder of the tour. The 1974 Live Recordings only features audio from Dylan’s sets.
A lot had happened in the eight years Dylan was away following his purported motorcycle crash. While Dylan retreated from the spotlight, the protest movement he was a pillar of in the 1960s continued into the new decade with the escalation of the Vietnam War and the Watergate scandal. In a time of uncertainty, listeners new and old continued to look back to Dylan’s songs. His popularity certainly didn’t wane, with one contemporary estimate reporting over seven percent of the U.S. population submitted orders for tickets to the 1974 tour, over 20 million applications in total. Dylan’s legend only grew in the time he was away, something he had to face every night when he finally got back on stage.
“I was looked upon as a songwriter of a generation or mouthpiece of a generation,” he told Robert Hilburn in 1992, per Rolling Stone. “That was the slogan put on me at the time. I had to meet that head-on. When I went back [to touring], nothing was working right for me. I had lost my raison d’etre. I didn’t know what I was doing out there, people throwing flowers and whatever. I didn’t know who they expected me to be. It was a crazy time.”
Dylan faced these feelings with the philosophy of reinvention that has remained a constant throughout his career. To open his first show in eight years, he dug up the obscure 1963 studio outtake “Hero Blues” and sent the message that, yes, Dylan was back, but he was back on his terms. This tour also saw the live debut of many songs including “All Along the Watchtower”, “Most Likely You Go Your Way (and I’ll Go Mine)”, and “Forever Young”, a recording of which is available with Tuesday’s album announcement.
