Bob Weir & Wolf Bros opened a five-night run at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY on Tuesday with a show featuring legendary jazz bassist Ron Carter and saxophonist Kenny Brooks.
Weir kicked off the run in a unique fashion, taking the stage by himself for a solo acoustic rendition of “Loose Lucy”. He was then joined by Jay Lane and Don Was for a trio version of Bob Dylan‘s “When I Paint My Masterpiece” before switching to electric guitar for a quartet telling of “Brown-Eyed Women” with Lane, Was, and Jeff Chimenti. The band finally reached full strength with the addition of Barry Sless on the fourth song, “Althea”, and then welcomed the Wolfpack strings and horn section, plus saxophonist Kenny Brooks, for “Playing In The Band”.

Even then, Weir still wasn’t done inviting friends to the stage. After runs through “Don’t Let Go” and “Mexicali Blues”, the Grateful Dead co-founder welcomed prolific bassist Ron Carter, who holds the distinction of being the most-recorded jazz bassist in history with over 2,000 studio sessions and has been widely sampled since the early days of hip-hop. Carter sat in on Weir’s tune “She Knows What I’m Thinkin'” and “Bird Song” to close out the first set.
Returning for set two, Weir once again opened the frame on acoustic guitar, this time with Wolf Bros. The band started with “Only a River” before welcoming the Wolfpack back to the stage for a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Silvio” that flowed into “Tequila” and back into “Silvio”. The steady flow continued with Dead classics “Estimated Prophet” and “He’s Gone”, followed by The Beatles‘ “Tomorrow Never Knows”, and after a celestial “Standing on the Moon”, the set concluded with a cover of Chuck Berry‘s “Around and Around”.
