Late Grateful Dead guitarist and vocalist Bobby Weir, who died last week at age 78, will be remembered at a public celebration of life event dubbed “Homecoming” this Saturday, January 17th at San Francisco, CA’s Civic Center Plaza.
The announcement of the Bobby Weir “Homecoming” memorial notes that “this is not a concert, and there will be no live musical performances.” Rather, it will be “a free public gathering honoring Bobby, whose music, spirit, and humanity shaped generations” with “gratitude, remembrance, and togetherness, along with special tributes.”
The official Weir memorial gathering, announced on Wednesday evening in a post shared on Instagram by Dead & Company, the Grateful Dead, and GD60 producers Another Planet Entertainment and Live Nation NorCal, will also include “a procession traveling three blocks down Market Street between 7th and 9th Streets at approximately 12:30 pm PT.”

The “homecoming” event in San Francisco will serve as a fitting send-off for the late Robert Hall Weir, whose story has been forever linked to the city. The Grateful Dead cut their teeth as musicians while living and gigging in the city in the mid-1960s. Among the most notable early Grateful Dead gigs in San Francisco were a series of free shows the band played in Golden Gate Park. In the summer of 2025, Weir and Dead & Company—plus a number of high-profile guests and tens of thousands of Deadheads from around the world—returned to Golden Gate Park for a three-show celebration of 60 years of the Grateful Dead’s music. The landmark shows wound up serving as Weir’s final live performances before his passing.
“Together, we will pay tribute in the community and collective heartbeat that he created,” the announcement adds. “A short sacred stop on his homecoming journey. … A hat tip on his way out, if you will…”
