Grammy-winning country singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile was the featured interview guest on Tuesday night’s episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert as she continues to promote her Broken Horses memoir, which also arrived on Tuesday.

During the two-part interview, Carlile discussed what it was like being friends with the late John Prine, who she described as “a prophet who makes you laugh,” the difficulties of writing her first memoir at such a young age, and the trauma she experienced being involved with an anti-gay Baptist church when she was younger.

Later on in the interview, Colbert also brought up Carlile’s professional relationship with Joni Mitchell, which inspired Carlile to pick up a nearby acoustic guitar for an impromptu solo rendition of Mitchell’s “A Case Of You”.
