Teenage guitar phenom Brandon “Taz” Niederauer hasn’t been the “new kid on the block” in music circles in quite some time, but he recently had the chance to make his first-ever appearance on a storied kids’ avenue: Sesame Street.

Taz marked the latest musical guest of The Not-Too-Late Show With Elmo, a Sesame Street spinoff “late night” talk show currently in its second season on HBO Max. The list of previous musical guests on The Not-Too Late Show includes Leslie Odom Jr.Kelly RowlandKacey MusgravesJonas BrothersLil Nas XDan + ShayH.E.R.Josh GrobanSara BareillesCiara, and more.

The young guitarist and bandleader appropriately used his first appearance at 123 Sesame Street to teach kids about musical instruments. “When you can’t stand still ’cause you hear a beat, that’s the sound of instruments that’s moving your feet,” he sang over a funky rhythm guitar pattern. “Yeah, they don’t look the same, they make different sounds, but when they play together, they can make us dance around.”

With help from Abby on guitar, Elmo on tambourine, and Cookie Monster on saxophone, Brandon even used the opportunity to give the next generation of young instrumentalists a bonus lesson in kindness: “Well they look and sound so different, just like you and me. But they still play great together, just like you and me.” Watch Taz jam out with Elmo and the Sesame Street crew in the clip below, or watch the full episode here.

Brandon “Taz” Niederauer will head to New York City on December 29th for a special Phish after-party tribute to the music of Jimi Hendrix at The Cutting Room. For tickets to the show, head here. For a full list of upcoming Taz tour dates, head here.
