On Monday night, Jimmy Kimmel Live! featured a soulful performance by Brittany Howard. The guitarist/vocalist worked through “History Repeats” from her new album, Jaime, as a part of the Jimmy Kimmel Live Mercedes-Benz Concert Series.

From the moment the Alabama Shakes frontwoman appeared on screen and stage, she immediately seized audience’s attention with her powerful stage presence and seemingly improvised bandmate interactions reminiscent of a James Brown performance. Dressed in a flowing silk robe accented by an all-black jumpsuit and offset with black Adidas sneakers accented with white stripes, Howard strutted about the outdoor stage while belting out the opening track from her debut solo album.

Bidding a fond hello to “everybody in this parking lot,” and “everybody out there in TV land,” Howard introduced herself and her bandmates before unleashing a performance that was part cautionary tale about not repeating mistakes and part soul revival meant to extricate the spirit of anguish over the past. The song’s driving funk back-beat and commanding vocals are reminiscent of Alabama Shakes, who have remained dormant since the release of their Grammy-winning 2017 single, “Killer Diller Blues”. After just recently completing her extended Fall tour promoting Jaime, Howard is slated for two more TV appearances on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah on December 4th and The Today Show on December 5th as well as five shows in the spring throughout the United States and United Kingdom.

Howard has a chance to add to her ever-expanding collection of Grammy Awards at the 62nd annual award ceremony next year, where “History Repeats” is nominated for both “Best Rock Song” and “Best Rock Performance.”
