Brittany Howard has shared a cover of Jackie Wilson‘s “(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher & Higher” for Amazon Music‘s Amazon Originals series. The cover also comes as part of the streaming platform’s programming for Women’s History Month.
Originally released in 1967 on Wilson’s record Higher and Higher, “(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher & Higher” went on to become a Top 10 pop hit and number one R&B track. Since then, the song has gone on to be covered by everyone from Dolly Parton to Bruce Springsteen, the latter of whom led an all-star version of the song to close the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame‘s 25th-anniversary concerts in 2009. That performance saw The Boss joined by an array of artists including Sam Moore, Darlene Love, Tom Morello, John Fogerty, Billy Joel, Jackson Browne, and Peter Wolf.
“I first heard Higher and Higher in Ghostbusters II,” Howard said in a press release. “I became a huge fan of the song and of course of Jackie Wilson’s version. My solo band started playing the song on tour and it became one of those special moments of the show where you could feel the entire room locked in and the energy reaching the next level. I chose to release this song because it reminds me of those special nights with my band and for its message that through love we can be lifted up higher and higher.”
