Once again, the hilarious ladies of Comedy Central’s Broad City dropped a reference to some of our beloved jam bands. On Wednesday night’s new episode, while returning to her childhood home in a suburb of Philadelphia, former Deadhead Abbi begins rummaging through old “gear” that brings her back to headier times in high school involving bands like Phish, RatDog, Dark Star Orchestra, the Disco Biscuits, and String Cheese Incident.
This is the second time this season that the Broad City girls have incorporated a jam band into an episode. On the recent episode “Co-Op”, Abbi professes her love for Phish to a fellow employee, dropping lyrics to “Run Like An Antelope” and “Cavern” and a reference to Rift.
Tonight’s Broad City Episode Was Full Of Phish References
Abbi has made her love for Phish and similar bands very public, detailing her jam band days in a recent interview with Relix. “I used to go to a lot of jam and Phish shows,” she recalled about growing up outside Philadelphia. “That’s what we did on the weekends— we’d see shows. It’s just such an amazing, rare thing to put yourself in that situation where you are improvising onstage.”
Viewers of tonight’s episode may have also spotted a Grateful Dead and Phish poster in Abbi’s childhood room, and noticed the protagonist sporting a Dead t-shirt towards the end.
