After reuniting for a pair of shows in December and closing out 2024 with their respective bands, the members of the Brownstein Family Band started off 2025 with a family affair at Ardmore Music Hall.
The chemistry between Jake Brownstein and Dani Battat of Eggy, Marc Brownstein of the Disco Biscuits, and Marc’s son Zach has come a long way in the nearly one year since the quartet’s debut at Nectar’s in Burlington, VT, where Zach attends college, and the four musicians were clearly having fun on stage. In fact, every band member with a microphone humorously told the crowd, “We’re having fun up here,” at some point in the night. When it was all over, Marc Brownstein admitted they were having such a good time that they completely abandoned the setlist they had planned.
“What I want you to do is read the setlist,” he said to the crowd. “I want everyone to pass the setlist around so you can see we did not play it. And we played all kinds of stuff that’s not on it. So that was a lot of fun.”
The setlist the band did play started with Sugar Ray‘s 1997 hit “Fly” followed by Jerry Garcia Band staple “That’s What Love Will Make You Do” (originally by Little Milton). The smooth grooves continued with Steve Miller Band‘s “Take the Money and Run” and Eggy original “Fly Frederick Fly”. The band then returned to the JGB catalog with “Cats Under the Stars” and finished the first frame with Traffic‘s “Dear Mr. Fantasy” and “Home Again” by the Disco Biscuits.
Battat and the Brownsteins started set two with Eggy’s “One Stop Shop” before delving into a sprawling sequence of the Grateful Dead‘s “West LA Fadeaway”, Eric Clapton‘s “Lay Down Sally”, and Eggy’s “Sweat Equity”, and then back into a fast version of “West LA Fadeaway” > “Lay Down Sally” > “Sweat Equity”. The band then returned to “Home Again” to finish the second set the same way it ended the first.
Returning to the stage for an encore, Brownstein Family Band capped off the night with Disco Biscuits classic “Portal to an Empty Head” and Eggy’s “All Wheels Turnin”.
