This Wednesday, August 1st, celebrate the 70th birthday of music icon, and hippie-culture figurehead Jerry Garcia.  The week will see many bands pay tribute to the Grateful Dead leader all over the country. Two of his Grateful Dead cohorts, Phil Lesh and Bob Weir, have their own shows in honor of their passed brother and band mate.

Phish Lesh will play a show at his recently opened Terrapin Crossroads; the site of some incredible Rambles recently. On Friday, Bob Weir celebrates at his TRI Studios; billed as Move Me Brightly:  Celebrating Jerry Garcia’s 70th Birthday.  This event features a band that includes Mike Gordon of Phish, Chris Robinson Brotherhood guitarist Neal Casal, Jeff Chimenti of RatDog, Joe Russo from Furthur/Duo, singer/songwriter Cass McCombs,  Chris Tomson of Vampire Weekend, former Grateful Dead member Donna Jean Godchaux, and Craig Finn and Tad Kubler of The Hold Steady.

The evening will feature exclusive interviews with many of Garcia’s peers and fellow musicians, including Carlos Santana. David Crosby’s moving tribute, “Cause I’m Missing Him Tonight,” penned specifically for the occasion, will be read during the show. Luke Wilson (The Royal Tenenbaums, Old School, Anchorman), a long-time fan of Grateful Dead, will take a moment away from acting to emcee the event. Bob Weir, Jackie Greene and former Major League baseball player Tim Flannery will sing the national anthem on Wednesday at San Francisco’s AT&T Park before the Giants take on the NY Mets.  As part of the park’s Jerry Garcia celebration, the game will feature a pre-game performance by Moonalice. Fans who buy special tickets will receive a birthday-edition Jerry Garcia bobblehead. These ticket packages will benefit the Rex Foundation. The game starts at 7:15 PM.

Here in New York, those wanting to partake in the celebrations this week to ring in Jerry’s 70th, Dead cover band Reckoning will be playing a show at the Jones Beach Bandshell this Friday, August 3rd at 8pm for FREE.  Long Island band TAUK will be playing in the opening slot.
