The tour announcement follows the news that Chance the Rapper will release his latest full-length LP, Star Line, on August 15th. The album will mark his first studio album since his official debut, 2019’s The Big Day, which received generally lukewarm reviews and largely faded from fans’ memories when its accompanying The Big Tour was postponed and later canceled due to personal conflicts.
Prior to Chance’s 2019 “debut,” however, he had already spent half a decade establishing himself as one of the most exciting young rappers on the scene with a string of acclaimed mixtapes: 2012’s 10-Day (which he famously recorded during a 10-day suspension from high school), 2013’s Acid Rap, and 2016’s Coloring Book. The latter two tapes helped challenge long-held distinctions between “albums” and “mixtapes,” charting on Billboard, earning Grammy Awards (including the first-ever Grammy for a streaming-only album), and catapulting Chance to mainstream stardom before he ever released an official LP.
Per a press release about Star Line, “The independent project reflects Chance’s global journey, artistically, spiritually, and physically, over the past six years. Created with longtime producer DexLvL and shaped by travels to Ghana, Jamaica, and art fairs around the world, Star Line blends hip-hop, soul, and experimental sounds with lyrical meditations on identity, resilience, and legacy. … While Chance has circled the globe in search of new perspectives, Star Line remains grounded in the worldview that has always defined Chance’s art: a deep, unshakable connection to Chicago and to Black culture across the diaspora.”
The album’s lead single, “Tree”, featuring Lil Wayne and Smino, is a meditation on cannabis justice, racial inequality, and Black resilience wrapped in a soulful flip of India.Arie’s classic “Video”.
