Saturday Night Live returned to television last night, where the cast of comedians provided their weekly array of jokes and sketches via Zoom with the long-running show’s first-ever “At-Home” episode.

Though it was certainly a change-up from the show’s usual studio production, the virtual episode treated viewers to an opening monolog from Tom Hanks (repping his music industry roots in a Playtone Records zip-up), a tribute to longtime SNL music supervisor Hal Wilner (who passed away on April 7th), and a performance Coldplay singer Chris Martin, who delivered a fitting cover of Bob Dylan’s “Shelter From The Storm”.

The black-and-white video pre-recorded by Martin welcomes viewers into his own home, where his creative space on this night was from the bench of his piano surrounded by candles and various instruments. Martin’s uptempo take on Dylan’s 1975 folk song heard him belt out the resonating lyrics, which although don’t relate specifically to what’s happening around the world today, come close enough to provide fans with a poetic sense of relief, even if just for a few minutes.
