Perennial headliners Tedeschi Trucks Band took a backseat on Saturday to open for Chris Stapleton on the country superstar’s All-American Road Show stadium tour. As was the case at last month’s show in TTB’s hometown of Jacksonville, FL, Stapleton welcomed Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks for a sit-in, this time on his own “I Was Wrong” at Arlington, TX’s Globe Life Field.
After joining forces on Chris’ iconic cover of “Tennessee Whiskey” last month, the expanded ensemble instead went with the original from the singer-songwriter’s 2017 sophomore album, From A Room: Volume 1. Though Stapleton has thoroughly proven he needs no assistance in the vocals department, Susan was there to lend her pipes for a full-throated reading of the bluesy number. Following the pair’s vocal back-and-forth, Derek chimed in for a blistering slide guitar solo that elicited audible cheers throughout the packed home of the MLB’s Texas Rangers.
Derek and Susan weren’t Stapleton’s only special guests of the set. Prior to the jam-blues power couple’s appearance, Chris welcomed the evening’s other supporting act Marcus King. Together, the guitar-wielding duo shared the spotlight for a cover of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers‘ “I Should Have Known It”, a gem from the late singer-songwriter’s oft-overlooked penultimate album Mojo from 2010.
Watch Chris Stapleton welcome Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi in Arlington, TX. Saturday’s show marked Tedeschi Trucks Band’s final appearance on Stapleton’s All-American Road Show, but King has opening gigs set into 2025. Visit Chris Stapleton’s website for tickets and a full list of tour dates.
