Three of the funk and jazz world’s most virtuosic voices—Cory Henry, Eric Krasno (Soulive), and Robert “Sput” Searight (Ghost-Note)—have teamed up to launch a new supergroup organ trio, aptly dubbed The Heavyweights.
The trio made its live debut in July with a sold-out show at L.A. hotspot The Mint, where they played a mix of classic soul, funk, jazz, R&B, and rock. The setlist included everything from Sam Cooke‘s “A Changing Is Gonna Come” and War‘s “The World Is A Ghetto” to Billy Cobham‘s fusion staple “Red Baron” and Jimi Hendrix‘s arrangement of “Hey Joe”.
Then, earlier this month, the band formally announced itself on Instagram with the message: “Introducing NEW Super Group ✨The HEAVYWEIGHTS Trio ✨” The post also said that they would be “playing select dates” and encouraged fans to “catch [them] when you can,” suggesting plans to continue booking shows around the members’ busy schedules.
On Thursday, the outfit reconvened at The Sun Rose in West Hollywood for a pair of shows, an early and a late show, and welcomed saxophonist Terrace Martin to sit in on a bluesy cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Red House”.
Blending gospel, funk, and jazz influences from Henry and Sput—who previously played together in Snarky Puppy—with Krasno’s deep-rooted soul-jazz and funk pedigree, The Heavyweights are a natural fit. Unlike many supergroups that fail to live up to lofty expectations, the trio proves greater than the sum of its parts. No further dates have been announced, but the project has already established itself as one to watch.
